Steinlager Shaka Longboard Series Scores Fun Queen’s

Contestants in the second event on the Steinlager Shaka Longboard Series scored some fun three to foot faces at the Queen’s surf  break at Kuhio Beach amongst the thousands of tourist surrounding the shores of Waikiki.

With the sun glistening through the off shore rights for the two days of competition; it was “rippeable” Queen’s with perfect conditions.

Leading the charge in the longboard competition was Waianae’s Kamu Auwae as he took down a field of 32 professional surfers to claim first and take the series lead along with $1200.00 in prize money for his efforts.

Second place went to another Waianae local in Duane DeSoto as the two battled for the lead in several exchanges throughout the twenty-minute final.

Auwae kept pacing himself through both the longboard and standup paddle divisions, surfing three continuous heats from the SUP semis and going straight into the pro final then back to the standup.

“It was all about going for two solid waves and I knew I had it during the final (of the longboard), and kept a good pace knowing Duane (Desoto) was right behind.” And added, “because I work during the week day and know I have to conserve when it gets down to the semi-finals, surfing back to back like I did at Sunset, I had to pick the right waves.”

Rounding the pro division, runner-up Duane DeSoto took home $600.00 and Kekoa Auwae and Keegan Edwards received $200.00 for third and fourth respectively.

In the standup paddle division, it was almost a mirror final of the longboard, but the first three finalists lost out to Waialua’s Ikaika Kalama in a heat that had Kalama, DeSoto and Kamu Auwae going head to head in exchanging some very high scores throughout the twenty-minute heat.

With two minutes to go, Kalama caught an open faced four-footer which faded left and on his turn back toward the peak, stepped to the nose of his board and rode for twenty yards and victory.

Second place went to Duane DeSoto with brothers Kamu and Kekoa Auwae third and fourth.

In the amateur longboard divisions, Jackson Hollingsworth took the Menehune crown, Nelson Ahina claimed first in the Junior Men and Daniel Stein won the Senior Men.

The next event on the Steinlager Shaka Longboard Series will be at Kewalo Basin, July 5th and 6th.
