The BURGER KING® Hawaii Amateur Surfing Association State Championships

Honolulu, Hawaii - May 22, 2008 -

With the focal point of surfing directed at Honolulu’s south shore, surfers from Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Maui and Hawaii gear up for the state’s largest amateur competition during the BURGER KING® Hawaii Amateur Surfing Association State Championships at the break off Magic Island, known as the Ala Moana Bowl, June 4th through 6th.

The three-day competition will have the state’s best surfers anxious and hungry for the prestigious honors and titles in 27 divisions in short-board surfing, longboarding and bodyboarding.

As for what’s new on this year’s BURGER KING® HASA State Championships menu, HASA director Wendall Aoki says, “For the first time, we’ll be running the computer scoring system like any world surfing professional event and feature four man heats from the quarter finals to the finals in the Boys, Junior Men and Girls divisions.”

And with the “Bowl,” known for its infamous grinding hollow left break, things get even tastier as Aoki adds, “This year we’ll give out a bonus to the three mentioned divisions in terms of travel fund cash prizes as $2,500 will be divided up among the twelve finalists.”

“BURGER KING® is proud to support the Hawaii Amateur Surfing Association and its efforts to further the sport of surfing within our communities,” said Denise Yamauchi, Managing Director for BURGER KING® Hawaii.  “We congratulate every competitor who made it to the State Championships and look forward to continue serving them and their families.”

The HASA State Championships has been the launching pad for many of Hawaii’s top professionals past and present including Triple Crown of Surfing director Randy Rarick, who won the prestigious Junior division back in the mid-1960’s.

Former champion surfers such as Mike Ho, Derek Ho, Sunny Garcia got their boost as division winner of the HASA State Championships and current world tour professionals Andy and Bruce Irons, Fred Patacchia, Pancho Sullivan and Roy Powers have honed their skills from the prestigious event.

In the forecast for the three days of competition, head high to two feet over head waves are expected along with favorable (off-shore) winds in the 15 knot range.
